Meet Joanna: A passionate renovations whiz and design strategist.

With a Masters of Architecture from Roger Williams University, Joanna joined our team as a designer in 2021. She has since gotten her Architecture License.

Before coming to Signal Works, she worked at an architecture firm focusing on renovations and was involved in every aspect of the design and construction process. At Signal Works she works in collaboration with the team to work out technical design aspects, solve any design problems, and implement design solutions. From site reviews to renderings, Joanna works on it all.

If you ever do a renovation project with us, there’s a good chance you’ll be working with Joanna. As a great listener with a heart for solving the day-to-day problems of busy buildings, she’ll work with you to find the right solutions for your space.

We sat down with Joanna to discover her favorite place and the secret behind her design passion. 

What’s your favorite place to be?

A place I value for the community I’ve become a part of is my local ceramics studio. It’s a place where people who have jobs in a variety of different fields (usually not in the arts) come to have a creative release. It’s a casual atmosphere where everyone is learning, failing, creating, admiring, and giving tips. And it’s not just about the clay. The community extends outside the studio as well.

What’s a greater purpose of architecture you’re passionate about?

I’m always aware that designing and building uses a lot of resources but it can also fully improve a person’s life. I try to find the balance of minimizing resources while maximizing the results. That’s why I find renovations and additions most fulfilling. It’s where I get to use the existing context of a building to create meaningful design. 

What’s your favorite part of the design process?

I get the most satisfaction when I can listen and absorb all the needs of a project and then distill it into a design strategy that solves the problem in the best possible way.
